Panasonic Tough book 30 have continues the trend of most tough laptops around. This fully rugged laptop may not be the overall good performer in this segment at $4,799.

Design

The Laptop equivalent of a tank, the Tough book 30 is built in a strong silver and black magnesium alloy chassis with a briefcase type handle. In this segment most 13.3 inch laptops are thin and light in weight, but the Panasonic Tough book 30 weighs is 8.4 pounds and it is 2.8 inches thick. The cover of the laptop is supported by two heavy hinges.

The display is 13.3 inch and daylight readable with touch screen. The display max resolution of 1024×768 is pretty low by today’s standards, but you can view images even in bright sun light, is a big plus point. The touch screen of the laptop is very responsive.

The keyboard response is good and little spacious, but the touch pad is a bit small. Below the touch pad there are six activity indicator lights.

Durability and Security

We put the Panasonic Tough book 30 laptop through some toughness tests. We dropped the laptop from the height of 38 inches on to a carpeted floor two times, making sure the laptop landed on two different edges. After drop, the laptop booted up and the laptop sustained no evidence of any damage.

We also test for moisture on the key board and touch pad of the Laptop by pouring water on two different spots on the key board. After wiping it down, we booted the laptop without any problem and the laptop functioned properly.

Each port and slot is protected by a gasket lined cover to prevent the laptop from moisture and dust.

The Panasonic Tough book 30 laptop have the latest security features, like Trusted Platform Module (TPM) chip and theft protection software i.e. Computrace has the ability to track the stolen laptop, biometric finger print scanner and a Smart Card reader.

Intel Launch Chipste for Low cost laptop

This year will be the year of the ULPC (Ultra low-cost PCs). While Intel (chip maker) is putting its strength behind its Atom (low-cost processors) which is specifically made for ULPC (Ultra low-cost PCs), now HP and Dell are also planning to launch ULPC (Ultra low-cost PCs) this year.
Asus which already has launched its 7-inch Eee-PC, and will also launch its 8.9-inch version ULPC (Ultra low-cost PCs) with extra features, while HCL with Microsoft is announced the launching of its new Mi Leap laptops.
Dell also plans to launch its ULPC (Ultra low-cost PCs) which is 8.9-inch laptop made for less than Rs 19,960/-. HP is also planning to launch its Mini Note PC, which is mainly to target at the educational segment, and the starting price would be around $ 499.
Asus, has sold over one million ULPC (Ultra low-cost PCs) i.e. Eee-PCs since its launch last year, and launched its ULPC (Ultra low-cost PCs) in Indian market early this year with two modal i.e. 7-inch, and price tag is around Rs 14,000/- and Rs 18,000/-.
Francis Kao (Asus India product manager), he said, is selling thousand laptops per month and looking for the collaboration with schools and colleges to promote the ULPC (Ultra low-cost PCs).
HCL and Microsoft also launched its Mi-Leap range of ULPC (Ultra low-cost PCs) powered by Windows XP Mi-Leap for just Rs 16,990/-. HCL is also offering its Linux based version with the price tag Rs 13,990/- onwards.
Prakash Bagri (Intel’s OEM business director) said the price may go down in future and it may cost around Rs 14,000/-. Intel will launch its microprocessors Atom in June that are exclusively designed for ULPC (Ultra low-cost PCs). Intel expects that the many ULPC (Ultra low-cost PCs) entering in the market will be powered by the Intel Atom microprocessors.

Microsoft and India’s HCL would introduce Windows OS based laptops and that will be the cheapest modal available worldwide.

Microsoft, and some other big vendors, is eyeing on the ULPC (Ultra low-cost PCs) market as a foremost growth opportunity, particularly in rising markets like INDIA and China. Microsoft announced that the ULPC (Ultra low-cost PCs) would extend the life of Windows XP OS.
ULPC (Ultra low-cost PCs) that run on Linux is launched by from Asus in INDIA, They also said that soon they would establish jointly a new Center of Excellence, staffed with 500+ programmers who develop Microsoft based solutions in the India.
According to Nasscom about 43% in 2008 IT services will grow in INDIA.

Build and Design

The new Lenovo SL-series laptops are not unlike its older R-series laptops. The SL-Series Laptop chassis is made up of plastic, which cut down the laptop weight and cost. A shiny surface replaces the old black paint which is commonly found on the Lenovo ThinkPads laptops.

Build quality is very good and above the average, with a tough feel, but not as tough as the Lenovo R or T series Laptop range. The Touch Point buttons of the Lenovo Laptop are very close to the top edge of the palm rest, and peep when pressed. This is just a quite minor defect.

The new light weight Inspiron laptop is basically a “netbook” which is designed mainly to surf the Web, chatting, creating blogs, downloading and uploading personal videos and images, mp3 or any other format of music and you can play online games.

The weight of new Dell Inspiron Mini 9 netbook is less than 2.5 lbs. Very eye-catching in design. The new Dell Inspiron Mini 9 netbook comes with 8.9 inch LCD display with LED back light, Wi-Fi and blue tooth connectivity, solid state drive (SSD) memory storage and inbuilt webcam.

Lenovo ThinkPad X200

Lenovo introduce the new Think Pad X200 laptop which is the newest ultra portable and sleek designed to swap its old Think Pad X 61 ultra portable laptop. A little bit small to the 13.3 inch Think Pad X 300, the X 200 encompasses essentials of both machines in a light weight package. The new Lenovo Think pad X200 comes with Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz processer P8600 with Three MB L 2 cache and the power consumption is as low as 25 TDP.

The Lenovo Think Pad X 200 laptop comes with the traditional black rubber finish that built in a rough frame. Weight of the laptop is just 2.95 pounds including the 4-cell battery, Think Pad X 200 is truly designed for mobile computing.
